Ranunculus Flowers: A Florist’s Guide to These Spring Flowers

Let’s hear it for the peony’s slightly smaller (but just as cool) little cousin: the ranunculus! With its layers of delicate petals and vibrant colours, the ranunculus flower is one of the prettiest, and sought-after, spring flowers. Loved by both florists and flower enthusiasts, this flower brings elegance and charm to any arrangement. Let’s dive into the world of ranunculus and explore everything from their seasonality to ranunculus care tips.

Where Do Ranunculus Grow?

At Hoek flowers, our love for ranunculus goes way back. It all started with our founder, Peter Hoek who first fell for their charm while driving his truck through the South of France and Italy. And honestly, it’s easy to see why!

The ranunculus flower thrives in sunny, temperate climates, with Italy being one of the top producers of this stunning flower. One of our key growers is Parodi in Sanremo, a place so dedicated to flowers that it’s literally nicknamed the Town of Flowers. If there’s anywhere perfect for growing ranunculus, it’s here!

An Exclusive Partnership with Parodi Sanremo

At Hoek flowers, we have an exclusive partnership with ranunculus grower Parodi. For over 17 years, we have built a strong, trusted, and personal relationship, where we work together to bring the freshest, highest-quality ranunculus to our florists. In fact, did you know that we buy 100% of their ranunculus?

Sanremo sits in the heart of the Italian Flower Riviera, a region known for producing top-quality flowers, including ranunculus. This area benefits from unique growing conditions, as the landscape extends from mountain foothills down to the sea. This geography gives growers like Parodi an incredible advantage: two extra hours of sunlight per day! More light means stronger stems, larger flower heads, and an overall better-quality ranunculus. Isn’t that amazing!

When Are Ranunculus in Season?

Ranunculus really steal the show during peak season in March. Around this time every year, a whopping 70% of the world’s ranunculus production happens!

But, while the ranunculus flower is primarily associated with spring, they are available from late winter through early summer, depending on the variety and growing region. The seasonality of the ranunculus flower makes them a favourite for spring weddings, events, and floral arrangements.

Why We All Love Ranunculus Flowers

Ranunculus are a florist favourite for many reasons: they have vibrant colours and a luxurious, textured look. Their petals form layer upon layer, creating a full, rosette-like flower.

With nearly every colour of the rainbow to choose from, ranunculus can be soft and romantic in whites and pastels or bold and dramatic in shades of red, orange, and deep purples. Their versatility makes ranunculus flowers perfect for creating everything from understated bridal bouquets to bold, statement centrepieces or arrangements.

The Most Popular Ranunculus Varieties

The ranunculus is a very versatile flower, not just for being able to pair beautifully with other flowers, but also because they come in several varieties. Each variety is a little bit different, but they all have their own unique charm. On our web shop, you can find some of the most popular ranunculus varieties. Here are four of our faves:

Ranunculus Romance

The Romance Ranunculus is known for its delicate, tissue-thin petals and a shape similar to Ranunculus Success but with a softer touch. Romance Ranunculus is the perfect variety for weddings for adding a sweet, romantic vibe to any bouquet. Popular colours like pink Maillane, peach Maritime, or off-white Courchevel make it a dreamy choice for those extra-special arrangements.

Ranunculus Butterfly

Ranunculus Butterfly has to be one of the cutest flowers out there! With its open, airy petals that shimmer in the light, it’s totally different from the more traditional ranunculus varieties. These flowers have a whimsical, fairytale look, and their petals often have two tones, giving them a butterfly-wing effect. They’re perfect for creating romantic and unique bouquets.

Ranunculus Elegance

If there’s one word to describe Ranunculus Elegance, it’s “classy.” With tightly packed petals that form a big, round flower, this variety is all about soft pastel shades like pink and cream. It’s the ideal flower for adding a touch of elegance to any bouquet or arrangement. Perfect for when you want to go all-out fancy!

Ranunculus Success

Ranunculus Success definitely lives up to its name! These flowers are tough, reliable, and absolutely gorgeous, with big, full heads and loads of petals. They come in a rainbow of colours, and special varieties like Success Pon’s bring an extra ruffled flair. Thanks to top-notch growers like Parodi from San Remo, these flowers are a must-have for any floral design.

How to Care for and Condition Ranunculus Flowers

To keep your wholesale ranunculus looking fresh and beautiful, a little care goes a long way. Here are some care tips to get the most out of your ranunculus flowers:

Step 1 – Hydration

Start by hydrating your ranunculus as soon as they arrive. Place them in cool water while they are still wrapped. This gives them time to adjust and soak up water while still having that support from the wrapping. After about an hour, unpack your ranunculus carefully and transfer them to a clean vase filled with fresh, cold water.

Step 2 – Cut the Stems

Next, cut the stems at a sharp 45-degree angle to help your ranunculus absorb water more effectively. Be sure to use clean tools to avoid bacteria, which can shorten their vase life. Remove any leaves that might sit below the waterline, as these can cause bacterial growth and make the water cloudy.

Step 3 – Add Flower Food

Add some flower food to the water for an extra boost of nutrients and be sure to refresh the water every two to three days. While you’re at it, re-trim the stems slightly to keep your ranunculus hydrated and looking their best.

Step 4 – Place Them in a Cool Spot

Finally, choose the perfect spot for your ranunculus. Ranunculus love cool, bright spaces but don’t do well in direct sunlight, near heat sources, or in drafty areas.

With these simple steps, your wholesale ranunculus can stay vibrant and fresh for a week or more, giving you plenty of time to enjoy their beauty.
